Study on the Level of Anxiety on the Patients with Gastroscopy

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the level of anxiety on the patients with gastroscopy.
The subjects in this study consisted of 101 patients who wanted to examine the gastroscopy in C university hospital located in Taejon.
The data was collected through STAT (state-trait anxiety inventory) by Spielberger for measurement to level of state anxiety from April 24 to May 6 in 1991.
The data was analyzed by S.P.S.S. program using percentage, t-test, variance analysis and paired t-test.
The results were as follows,
1. More than 75% of the subjects were over 40 years old and male subjects were more than female.
2. In analysis of the relationship of state anxiety with general characteristics,
1) The level of anxiety on female was higher than male both before and after gastroscopy (before gastroscopy : p=0.002, after gastroscopy : p=0.344): There was significant difference between male and female before gastroscopy.
2) The level of anxiety of subjects who had no occupations was higher than that of subjects who had occupations before and after gastroscopy(before : p=0.007, after p=0.112). There was significant difference in case of before gastroscopy.
3) The level of anxiety of spouseless subjects was higher than that of subjects having spouses before and after gastroscopy (before : p=0.0193, after : p=0.0013). There were significant differences both before and after gastroscopy.
4) The level of anxiety of the patients who had hospitalized before was higher than the patients who had never hospitalized before gastroscopy (before : p=0.579).
3. The level of state anxiety of the patients checked before gastroscopy was significantly higher than that of the patients checked after gastroscopy(p=0.0000).
